1. TIAN Bistro on Spittelberg, Schrankgasse 4, 1070 Vienna
The TIAN is one of the best vegetarian restaurants in the world and is a true pioneer when it comes to vegetarian and vegan star cuisine.
In the bistro branch on Spittelberg you can have a leisurely breakfast and dinner. Chef Paul Ivić enchants his guests with experimental dishes, which can definitely be described as soul food.
The TIAN Bistro relies on seasonal ingredients from regional farmers in order to take the cycle of nature into account to a large extent. As a thank you for this commitment, there is not only the already mentioned Michelin star, but also four toques from Gault Millau.
Our conclusion: The TIAN is definitely not the cheapest place in Vienna. However, if you include the quality of the food, the fine ambience and the many awards, the costs seem more than justified. Quality sets the pace here. For us a unique restaurant in Vienna with a twist, which also pleasantly surprises meat fans.
2. Alma Gastrothèque, Grosse Neugasse 31, 1040 Vienna
The small restaurant called Alma from the Wieden district makes the greatest things you could wish from vegetables and herbs. The head chef Christina gets her ingredients from selected suppliers on the mountains, in the valley and by the sea.
As befits a restaurant of this class, the wine list leaves nothing to be desired. The wine expert Andreas opens up surprising beverage perspectives away from the usual.
You can expect dishes with soul and drinks with esprit.
All in all an absolutely great experience with a cozy ambience, excellent food and exciting wines.
3. Gasthaus zum Holunderstrauch, Schreyvogelgasse 3, 1010 Vienna
The Gasthaus zum Holunderstrauch is somewhat inconspicuous and rather hidden, just a few minutes' walk from Café Landmann.
The rustic restaurant convinces with a traditional yet cozy interior. The restaurant is usually well frequented and there is a pleasant feel-good atmosphere throughout the rooms.
The service is mostly courteous and very helpful with the orders. The menu is clear and diverse. From onion roast to baked mushrooms with salad or roasted dumplings with egg - here you will find everything the Viennese heart desires.
The dishes are all delicious, authentic and freshly prepared. The price-performance ratio is right here. Especially when you consider that you are still in the 1st district. You can drink fresh grape juice and home-grown wines.
Our tip: For all those with a sweet tooth, we recommend the Kaiserschmarren. It is baked freshly with every order and tastes absolutely delicious.
4. Heunisch & Erben, Landstrasser Hauptstrasse 17, 1030 Vienna
The Heunisch & Erben wine bar on Landstraße is a chic, simple restaurant with Austrian cuisine and a large selection of regional and international (natural) wines. A real insider tip for us, because the overall concept is convincing here.
The interior is timeless and homemade, but still looks very stylish. A sky of wine crates hangs from the ceiling, wine bottles pile up on the walls and concrete lamps dangle above the tables. The restaurant's menu is just as undogmatic as the architecture. As usual for this type of restaurant, it is clear, regularly changing and also seasonal and regional.
Thanks for this successful concept the restaurant achieved 3 toques and 16 Gault Millau points. Chapeau!
5. Das Lokal im Hof, Viktorgasse 22, 1040 Vienna
Last but not least, we introduce you to a real treat - especially when it comes to hidden restaurants for special occasions – “Das Lokal im Hof” in the former Alpine milk center in Vienna's fourth district.
Variations interpreted in a modern way determine the pace of the kitchen here: light, fresh and high product quality. From the finely compiled lunch menu to a selected, more extensive evening menu, the restaurant at the farm has a number of culinary delicacies to offer.
A special highlight: there is a small retreat area on the gallery platform, from which you can enjoy a view of the courtyard or the ground floor level.
One thing is clear - you will definitely be full and happy in these mentioned restaurants in Vienna.
